Colin McLean is a Mayo-based ghillie covering the full range of the county's finest lough fisheries — Lough Conn, Lough Cullin, Lough Mask, Lough Carra, and the northern reaches of Lough Corrib. Originally from Aberdeenshire, where he served his fishing apprenticeship on the rivers Dee, Don and Ythan, Colin has been living and fishing in the west of Ireland for many years and is thoroughly embedded in the local angling community.
Colin guides by both fly and trolling depending on the lough, the season, and the conditions. His particular strength is his breadth of knowledge across five significant fisheries — a real advantage for visiting anglers who want to make the most of a stay in Mayo without being locked into a single water.
A passionate fly tyer with a preference for natural materials and traditional patterns, Colin ties all his own flies and shares them generously with clients. He also writes the widely read "Claretbumbler" fishing blog — an honest, well-crafted account of angling across the west of Ireland that has built a loyal following among both Irish and visiting anglers. His book, 'Angling around Ireland', details his trials and triumphs as he attempts to catch a fish from each of the 32 counties in the island of Ireland.
