Owen Trill is a professional fly dresser originally from the Claddagh in Galway, now based in Claremorris, Co. Mayo. He started fishing at ten on the banks of the Corrib Estuary with his late father and began tying a few years later under the guidance of Michael Costello. He has been at the vise for over twenty years since.
Owen ties salmon and sea trout patterns for both clear and peat-stained waters — working with traditional variations as well as his own original dressings that have been fished across Ireland, the UK, and internationally. He is a tier for Ahrex Hooks and Kopter Scissors, and has demonstrated at the BFFI, the Dutch Fly Fair, the Scottish Fly Fair, the Irish National Show in Swords, and the Irish Fly Fair at Killyhevlin.
Beyond the vise, Owen guides on rivers throughout Connacht — including the Erriff and the Galway Salmon Weir — bringing the same attention to detail from his fly dressing to his time on the water.
Owen gives back to the next generation through the Galway Fly Tying Guild during the winter months and schools angling programmes run in partnership with IFI.
