Islandmagee is a peninsula in County Antrim separating Larne Lough from the North Channel of the Irish Sea. Its rocky shoreline is fished for pollack, wrasse, and mackerel.
The waters off Islandmagee, on the east coast of County Antrim, hold one of the most significant Flapper Skate populations accessible from the Irish coast. This is an exclusively boat fishing destination — charter vessels depart from Larne Harbour on the western shore of the peninsula to work the deep water off the Gobbins cliffs and into the North Channel, where Flapper Skate of exceptional size have been encountered, tagged and released on a scientific basis since the early 2000s.
The Flapper Skate (Dipturus intermedius) is a critically endangered species — the largest skate in the world, capable of reaching wing spans exceeding two metres and weights of over 100 kilograms. It was previously grouped with the Common Skate but is now recognised as a distinct species, more restricted in range and more vulnerable to decline. The North Antrim coast, from Larne north to Dunseverick, is one of the most important Flapper Skate grounds on the Irish coast, and the skate encountered off Islandmagee are among the largest fish routinely caught and released in Irish waters.
All Flapper Skate at this venue are caught, measured, tagged and returned. Participation in the ongoing tagging programme contributes directly to scientific understanding of population, growth rate, distribution and seasonal movement. Anglers who fish these marks effectively become citizen scientists. The ISFC records from Islandmagee, which include over 70 verified Flapper Skate specimens, represent a significant body of data from a venue that was essentially unknown to sea anglers before the first systematic skate trips began in 2001.
Alongside the skate, the deep water off Islandmagee produces Spurdog in good numbers — the dominant species in the ISFC records from this venue — along with Blackmouthed Dogfish and other deep-water species. The North Channel has strong tidal currents and deep marks require heavy tackle and leads of 2 pounds or more to hold the bottom.
Larne is the departure point for all fishing at this venue. The town has good transport connections and accommodation options. The Gobbins cliff path on the Islandmagee coast is an attraction in its own right, offering one of the most dramatic coastal walks in Northern Ireland for non-fishing days.

Charter boats depart from Larne Harbour on the A8, 30km north of Belfast. Larne is served by road and rail from Belfast and is the departure point for the Cairnryan ferry to Scotland. The Islandmagee peninsula is connected to the mainland at its northern end near Millbrook. All fishing here is from charter boats — no shore access to the deep water marks.

Anchor in 60–100 metres of water over the deep channel marks off the Gobbins. Present a large whole mackerel or similar substantial bait on the bottom on a heavy paternoster or running ledger. Leads of 1.5–2kg are typically required to hold position in the strong North Channel tidal currents. Allow fish to pick up and move off with the bait before applying pressure. Skate are immensely powerful — maintain steady pressure without rushing the fish. Measure, tag and return the fish in the water where possible.
⚠️Common mistake: Using inadequate tackle. Flapper Skate require 80–100lb class outfits with appropriate reels and terminal tackle. Light or medium gear will be unable to control a large skate in deep water with strong current.

Spurdog are schooling fish that respond to fresh fish strip on standard paternoster rigs. Once the boat is anchored over a mark holding spurdog, multiple fish can be taken on a multi-hook rig. A 20–30lb class outfit is appropriate.
