Kenmare Bay — also widely known as the Kenmare River, though it is a sea inlet rather than a river — cuts deep into the mountains of the Iveragh and Beara peninsulas in south Kerry, forming one of the longest and most sheltered sea inlets on the Wild Atlantic Way coast. The bay stretches some 40 kilometres from the Atlantic approaches to the town of Kenmare at its head, narrowing gradually through a landscape of steep hillsides, oak woodland and small headlands. It is one of the most scenic angling settings in Ireland.
The sheltered inner reaches of the bay provide excellent conditions for small boat anglers, with flat calm water accessible for much of the season and a mix of sandy bottom, rocky reef and deep channel that supports a wide range of species. Ray, Dogfish, Flatfish, Spurdog and Conger are the standard inshore species in the bay, with Tope appearing on the sandier ground. The rocky headlands and reefs on the northern and southern shores hold Wrasse, Pollack and Conger in good numbers accessible to shore anglers.
The outer bay and the approaches toward the Atlantic offer more varied and demanding fishing. The channel between the Beara and Iveragh peninsulas deepens considerably and is influenced by the North Atlantic Drift, bringing warmer water that supports species uncommon further north. Kenmare town is at the head of the bay on the N71, 35km from Killarney and 30km from Glengarriff. Small boat launching available at Kenmare pier and at several points on the northern shore of the bay. The N71 follows the southern shore of the bay toward Sneem and Cahersiveen; the R571 follows the northern shore toward Lauragh and the Beara Peninsula.

Locate clean sandy ground in 5–15 metres in the inner bay and anchor. Present squid and mackerel on a pennel rig on a running ledger or paternoster. Ray patrol sandy ground on a flooding tide. Middle tides are usually most productive.
⚠️Common mistake: Fishing over mixed or rough ground for ray. Thornback Ray strongly prefer clean sandy bottom — locate the sand before anchoring.

⚠️Common mistake: Fishing exposed rocky marks in offshore winds. The outer bay marks can be dangerous in strong westerly or south-westerly winds — fish the sheltered northern shore marks in these conditions.
