Lough Muckno at Castleblayney in County Monaghan is widely regarded as Ireland's finest natural coarse match fishing venue — a reputation built over decades of hosting national and international competitions. The lake covers approximately 325 hectares of dark, island-studded water on the eastern edge of the town, with depths reaching twenty metres.
The fishery holds enormous stocks of bream, roach, roach-bream hybrids, rudd, tench, perch, and pike. Match weights of fifteen to twenty kilograms are regularly recorded, and specimen fish of several species are taken each year. Pike exceeding thirty pounds have been caught, and the bream fishing in particular draws anglers from across Ireland and Europe.
What sets Muckno apart from many Irish coarse venues is the quality of its angling infrastructure. Significant investment from Monaghan County Council and Coillte has created well-maintained fishing platforms with drive-to-peg parking at several locations around the lake. The most popular stretches — White Island, Black Island, Concra Wood, and South Lodge — each offer dozens of developed pegs with consistent depths and evenly distributed fish stocks.
The lake has hosted the European Coarse Angling Championships, the FIPSed World Feeder Fishing Championship for Clubs, the All-Ireland Championships, and numerous other prestigious events. The Concra Wood stretch meets CIPS international standards for competition venues.
Muckno fishes well from May through to February, with the warmest months producing the biggest catches. Pole, feeder, waggler, and whip methods all produce results. The lake is also an excellent pike fishery, with boat fishing giving access to the many bays, islands, and drop-offs that pike patrol.
Castleblayney is easily reached from Dublin via the M1 and N2 — roughly ninety minutes' drive. The town has good accommodation, and Lakeside Angling on Main Street is the go-to tackle shop for local information, bait, and access codes.

South Lodge also off the N53. Black Island accessible via bridge from the town side. Drive-to-peg parking available at most locations. Summer Match Fishing (May – September)

Dark groundbait mix is favoured locally. Fish at three to six metres depth using pole or feeder. Waggler also effective. Red maggot, sweetcorn, and worm (for bream) are the standard hook baits. Feed regularly to build and hold the swim.

Where to Fish at Lough Muckno
White Island
The most popular coarse fishing venue on the lake. Accessed through Hope Castle gates. Eastern shoreline pegs fish to about six metres depth with a shelf feature. Produces many hundred-pound bags annually. Pole, waggler, and feeder all effective.
Concra Wood
International standard competition stretch. Accessed off the N53. Many developed pegs fishing into three to four metres, with depths to nine metres possible off the Belfast Steps. Particularly good for quality roach catches.
Black Island / Yellow Island
Good all-round fishing with consistent depths. Accessible via bridge from the town side. Popular for both pleasure and match fishing.
South Lodge
Accessed off the N53. Excellent fishing close to the road, suitable for anglers with reduced mobility. Depths of five to six metres on the inside of the islands.
Conservation & stewardship

Bye-law No. 950 (2017) provides for mandatory catch and release for all coarse fish and pike on Lough Muckno. Keepnets must be used and all fish returned carefully. This conservation measure protects the lake's exceptional fish stocks for future generations of anglers.
