River Mourne is a big spate river (20m+ wide) in County Tyrone, formed at the confluence of the River Derg and River Strule and flowing past Strabane and Victoria Bridge into the River Foyle. It forms part of the River Foyle and Tributaries ASSI, designated for holding one of the largest Atlantic salmon populations in Europe, with a salmon and sea trout season running 1 April to 20 October.

The River Mourne is widely regarded as the finest salmon river in Northern Ireland, forming the largest and most productive tributary of the Foyle system. Flowing from Newtownstewart to Strabane, where it joins the River Finn to form the Foyle, the Mourne is a large, fast-flowing river — up to 100 metres wide in places — set in the rolling farmland and woodland of County Tyrone, close to the Donegal border.
The river drains the confluence of the Strule and Derg rivers at Newtownstewart and carries the combined run of fish from a vast upland catchment. The Foyle system, of which the Mourne is the centrepiece, has one of the largest Atlantic salmon runs in Northern Europe. Spring salmon enter from April, with the main grilse and summer salmon run peaking from June through July. Good fishing can also be had through September and October as autumn fish arrive. The season runs from 1st April to 20th October.
Sea trout are a highlight of the summer season. Runs typically begin in early to mid-June, with the bulk of fish arriving from July onwards. Most sea trout on the Mourne average around three-quarters of a pound to one and a half pounds, with fish to around 3 pounds regarded as a good specimen. They are best fished for at dusk and into darkness using traditional wet fly patterns on a floating or sink-tip line.
The river fishes well across a range of conditions. Some beats fish effectively even in low water. After a flood, once the river begins to stabilise and drop, sport can be exceptional across all species. Shrimp patterns are extremely popular on the Mourne, with the Bann Special, Gold Shrimp, Apache Shrimp, and similar patterns all proven producers. Standard double-handed rods of 14 to 15 feet are the norm for salmon in normal to high water conditions, with a single-handed rod appropriate in low summer conditions.
Fishing is available on a mix of private estate and club water, with day tickets accessible at various points along the river. The Sion Mills beat, managed by Sion Mills Angling Club, has been developed to improve accessibility including for anglers with disabilities, with a riverside walk giving good access to productive pools.

The River Mourne flows from Newtownstewart to Strabane in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Fishing access is available through a combination of private estate beats, club water, and DAERA-managed public water. Key access points include the Sion Mills beat (Sion Mills Angling Club), Baronscourt Estate (Newtownstewart), and DAERA waters accessible with a licence and day permit. Spring (April – mid-May)
Spring salmon enter the system from opening day on 1st April. The numbers are more modest than the summer run but the fish are larger and in exceptional condition. Double-handed rods with sinking or intermediate lines are standard. Some of the deeper pools fish particularly well in the higher spring water.
Summer (June – July)
The prime season. Grilse and summer salmon arrive in numbers from June. Sea trout runs begin in early to mid-June with the bulk of fish arriving in July. This is the most productive period across both species. The river can fish well even in lower water conditions during this period.
Late Summer / Autumn (August – October)
A cool, wet August can extend the summer run. September and October see fresh autumn salmon entering the system and sport can be very good, particularly after a flood. The season closes on 20th October.

Double-handed rods of 14 to 15 feet rated for 10/11 weight lines are standard in normal to high water. Shrimp patterns dominate on the Mourne. A sink-tip or intermediate line gets the fly down in higher flows. Work each pool systematically, covering the water from the head down. The Mourne responds well to a relatively slow, swinging presentation.
⚠️Common mistake: Fishing only in the main current. Many fish lie just out of the strongest flow, at the edges of current seams and in the slacker water behind boulders and pools.

Switch to a 10 to 11 foot single-handed rod rated for 7 to 9 weight in low water conditions. Smaller flies on size 12 to 14 hooks are more effective. A floating line and a slow, delicate presentation is key. Dawn and dusk are the most productive periods.
⚠️Common mistake: Continuing to fish large flies and heavy lines in low clear water. Scaling down dramatically often makes the difference between blank days and fish on the bank.

Sea trout fishing is predominantly a night and dusk pursuit on the Mourne. A 9 to 10 foot rod rated for 6 to 7 weight with a floating or sink-tip line is ideal. Fish traditional wet fly patterns on a team of two or three, working through the pools and runs from dusk onwards. The larger fish arrive earlier in the season — June and early July produce the best specimens.
⚠️Common mistake: Starting too early. Sea trout on spate rivers are most active after dark. Arriving at the river an hour before dusk and fishing through until midnight is far more productive than daytime sessions.

Sion Mills Beat
Managed by Sion Mills Angling Club, this productive stretch near Sion Mills village has been developed with accessibility improvements including a riverside walk. Day tickets available from the Sion Mills Information Office. Good all-round salmon and sea trout water.
Baronscourt Estate
One of the premier private beats on the Mourne, managed by Baronscourt Estate near Newtownstewart. Accommodation at the estate is available for fishing guests. Known for high-quality salmon pools.
DAERA Waters
A section of public water managed by DAERA (Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs). Accessible with a DAERA rod licence and day permit. Good value access to quality river water.
Newtownstewart Area
The upper section of the Mourne near Newtownstewart, where the Strule and Derg rivers join to form the main river. Spring salmon water with some excellent pool fishing early in the season.

The River Mourne is part of the Foyle system, managed jointly under the Loughs Agency, which is a cross-border body responsible for the management of the Foyle and Carlingford areas. Atlantic salmon stocks are under pressure across their range and all anglers are encouraged to practice catch and release, particularly for spring fish and hen fish. The Loughs Agency rod licence endorsement is required in addition to the DAERA licence for the Foyle system waters.
