Inch Beach is a long sand spit on the south side of the Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry, projecting into Castlemaine Harbour. The beach and adjoining estuary are fished for bass and flatfish.
Inch Beach is one of the finest surf angling destinations in the south-west of Ireland — a three-mile sand spit that juts into the sheltered waters of Castlemaine Harbour on the Dingle Peninsula. Its unusual geography creates a dynamic fishing environment: the surf beach on the seaward side is exposed to Atlantic swells, while the calmer inner side of the spit fishes differently again, particularly for flatfish and sea trout on the flood tide.
The beach is justifiably famous for its bass fishing. The mix of Atlantic surf, clean sandy substrate, and the rich nutrient flow from Castlemaine Harbour makes it ideal habitat for European bass. Fish work the breakers in low light conditions, hunting sandeels and small baitfish in the wash. Dawn and dusk sessions on a flooding tide, particularly in settled westerly conditions, produce the best results.
Flatfish are present throughout the accessible season. Flounder are reliably caught along the inner shoreline and in the calmer water at the spit's tip. Plaice feed on the sandy ground further along the beach. Both respond well to ragworm or lugworm fished static on a running ledger.
Sea trout are an underrated quarry at Inch. Fish moving between Castlemaine Harbour and the Laune and Maine river systems pass through this area in summer, and anglers spinning or fly fishing with sandeel imitations in the surf can intercept them. A State salmon and sea trout licence is required when targeting sea trout in tidal waters.
Access is straightforward — there is a large car park at the beach entrance with year-round access, and most of the fishable beach is within a short walk. The beach sees significant tourist traffic in summer; early morning sessions avoid crowds and coincide with the best fishing anyway. Castlegregory and Annascaul are the nearest villages with accommodation and basic supplies.

Inch Beach is reached via the R561 from Annascaul or the R559 from Dingle town. There is a large pay-and-display car park at the beach entrance. The beach is accessible on foot along the full length of the spit. A café operates at the car park during summer. Parking charges apply in peak season.

The Surf Beach
The Atlantic-facing side of the spit provides classic surf angling conditions. A moderate swell creates a productive colour in the water that brings bass and flatfish into the breakers. The ideal conditions are a 2–3 foot swell with light westerly winds and a flooding tide.
The Inner Shore
The inner face of the spit facing Castlemaine Harbour is sheltered and productive for flatfish and sea trout. This side fishes particularly well in rough westerly weather when the exposed surf beach is too coloured or turbulent to fish effectively.

Spring (March – May)
Flounder and early flatfish are active. Bass begin to appear from late April. Avoid bass fishing from 15 May during the spawning closure.
Summer (June – August)
The prime season once the bass closure lifts in mid-June. Bass feed actively in the surf on warm evenings. Sea trout are present from late June. Mackerel can be caught off the tip of the spit with feathers or spinners.
Autumn (September – November)
Bass fishing can be excellent in September and October as fish feed hard before winter. Calm, settled days with a light westerly swell produce the best conditions. Dogfish become more numerous in the surf from October.
Winter (December – February)
Quieter but fishable. Flounder are reliable on the inner shore. The beach is exposed in south-westerly gales — check conditions before making the trip.

Fish the first two hours of the flooding tide from dawn. Cast beyond the second breaker and fish back slowly. Peeler crab fished static on a pulley rig is the most consistent bait. Surface lures and spinners work in calm, clear water.
⚠️Common mistake: Fishing too far out — bass hunt in the surf table and near shore, not in open water. Short to medium casting is often more productive than maximum distance.

Main Surf Beach
The full three-mile length of Atlantic-facing beach. Bass territory. Best fishing from the mid-point to the tip of the spit where the water is deepest.
Spit Tip
Where the spit meets open water. Good for mackerel with feathers and for sea trout spinning in summer. The tidal flow here creates a productive rip.
Inner Shore
The sheltered Castlemaine Harbour side of the spit. Flounder, sea trout, and flatfish. Fishable in all but the calmest easterly conditions.

European bass are a slow-growing, late-maturing species that has been under significant pressure across European waters. The mandatory spawning closure (15 May–15 June) and daily bag limit of 2 fish are minimum legal requirements — many anglers at Inch choose to return all bass regardless of size. Catch-and-release extends the quality of fishing for everyone and helps protect stocks for future generations.
