Tarbert Pier sits on the Shannon Estuary in north Kerry, near the Tarbert–Killimer car ferry crossing. The pier and estuary shoreline are fished for bass, flounder, and mullet.
Tarbert sits on the south shore of the Shannon Estuary in north Kerry, where the river has widened into a broad tidal channel before finally opening to the sea at Loop Head. It is a working village best known for the Killimer car ferry that crosses to County Clare, but the two fishing piers in the village are among the more productive pier marks on the estuary's Kerry shore.
The Shannon Estuary at Tarbert is tidal, sheltered, and nutrient-rich — a very different environment from the exposed Atlantic marks further south. The water is never fully marine but it carries a strong range of estuarine species, including some that rarely turn up on open coast marks. The tidal range is significant, and timing a session around the tide is more important here than at many other venues.
A conger eel landed from the outer pier at Tarbert — one of the best conger marks on the Shannon Estuary.
The outer pier is the more productive of the two, particularly at low water and on the early flood when conger eels move into the shallower ground to feed. Bull huss to over 10lbs have been recorded here, and dogfish are caught on almost every visit. Thornback ray are a possibility on the early flood, particularly when fishing crab or fish bait over the cleaner ground just off the pier end.
The inner pier produces flatfish — primarily flounder — throughout the tide, with the flooding tide the most reliable period. Whiting and codling are present in autumn and winter, adding variety to sessions that can otherwise be dominated by the more predictable dogfish and conger.
Tarbert is useful for anglers staying further up the estuary or based in North Kerry who want accessible pier fishing without a long drive to the coast. The village has a pub and basic facilities, and the ferry crossing provides an easy link to the Clare shore marks if conditions demand a change of venue.

Tarbert village is on the N69 road between Listowel and Limerick, approximately 30km north of Tralee. The fishing piers are in the village itself, distinct from the Killimer car ferry terminal which is signposted separately. Parking is available near the piers. The village has a pub and limited provisions.

The main fishing structure at Tarbert. Most productive at low water and the first half of the flooding tide. Drop bait directly below the pier end for conger and bull huss. Also worth casting off the pier head for ray on the flood.
The Inner Pier
The sheltered inner structure is a reliable flatfish and general species mark. Less dramatic than the outer pier but accessible to all levels and productive in conditions where the outer pier is exposed.
Night Fishing
Tarbert's piers come into their own after dark. Conger are predominantly nocturnal feeders and the absence of boat traffic in the estuary after dark means fish move more freely to the structure. Autumn nights with a steady flooding tide are the peak period.

Dogfish, bull huss, and conger are active year-round. Flounder fishing picks up on warmer flooding tides. Thornback ray are a possibility from spring onwards. The estuary fishes steadily throughout summer with little variation in species.
Autumn and Winter (September – February)
The most productive period for variety. Whiting and codling appear in autumn and can provide excellent sport on light gear. Conger and bull huss remain active through winter. Night sessions on the outer pier in October and November can be highly productive.

Fish at low water or on the first half of the flood. Drop bait directly beside the pier structure rather than casting away from it. Conger hold tight to the base of the pier wall. Use a wire trace for conger to protect against bite-offs. A strong grip lead keeps bait in position in the tidal current.
⚠️Common mistake: Fishing only at high water — by this point fish have dispersed away from the structure into the wider estuary. The transition from low water to flood is the key window.

Cast along the edge of the channel on the flooding tide. Flounder feed actively as the tide covers the muddy margins. A slow retrieve or occasional twitch of the bait can trigger takes. Keep the bait moving — flounder follow movement.
⚠️Common mistake: Casting too far into the channel where the bottom is deeper and the tidal run too strong. The best flounder ground is in the shallower water along the edges.
