Youghal stands at the mouth of the River Blackwater where it meets the Celtic Sea — one of Ireland's great river estuaries opening to the open coast between County Cork and County Waterford. The town's medieval walls, the Collegiate Church of St. Mary, and the Clock Gate Tower make Youghal one of the most historically atmospheric fishing bases in the south of Ireland. Sir Walter Raleigh served as mayor here in 1588 and 1589; in 1956, John Huston used Youghal as the primary location for filming Herman Melville's Moby Dick. The fishing at the Blackwater estuary mouth is less famous than the town's history, but it is consistent, varied and accessible.
The estuary offers two quite different fishing environments. On the western bank, the sheltered Blackwater channel holds Flounder, Bass, Codling and Mullet in the slower reaches above the bridge. The tidal dyke wall running south from the old Carpet Factory Pier is a particularly productive stretch for Flounder and Bass on flooding tides. On the eastern shore the shingle beach at Youghal Strand extends for five kilometres, offering excellent beach fishing for Bass, Flounder and Coalfish — a popular match venue that hosts several annual competitions.
The open bay south of the harbour entrance provides boat fishing over the offshore sandbanks for Dogfish, Ray, Tope and Whiting. Youghal supports a charter fishing operation (Sea Hunter) capable of accessing the offshore ground and deeper marks to the south and east. The bay is sheltered enough in moderate conditions for small boat anglers launched from the harbour slipway, with Tope available on the cleaner sandy ground in summer.
Beyond the immediate fishing, Youghal is an excellent touring base for the east Cork and south Waterford coast. Ballycotton lies 20 kilometres to the west — another significant sea angling venue — and the Blackwater valley offers some of the finest salmon and trout fishing in Ireland. The ISFC data from Youghal records over 160 verified specimens reflecting the variety of species available in the estuary and offshore ground.
The town has good accommodation, restaurants and facilities for visiting anglers. The harbour is central, accessible by the N25, and offers a well-sheltered departure point for both shore and boat fishing on this section of the south-east coast.

Youghal is on the N25, 50km east of Cork city and 30km west of Waterford. Harbour access from the town centre. Boat slipway at the harbour. Shore fishing from the Clock Gate area, the dyke wall south of town, and Youghal Strand (R634 coast road south).

The Munster Blackwater is one of Ireland's great rivers and its estuary at Youghal is a complex and productive system. The meeting of fresh and salt water creates a tidal zone rich in bait fish and invertebrates that supports a wide range of predatory species.
Historic Setting
Youghal's medieval town walls, the 800-year-old Collegiate Church of St. Mary and the 18th-century Clock Gate Tower make this one of the most architecturally rich small towns in Ireland. The fishing is good; the setting is extraordinary.
Youghal Strand Beach Fishing
The five-kilometre shingle strand south of Youghal is one of the best and most consistent beach Bass marks on the south coast, hosting several annual match events. The beach produces best on a rolling surf and is most productive at dawn and dusk away from peak summer tourist activity.

Spring (March – May)
Bass begin to show on the beach marks. Flounder fishing in the estuary on worm baits. Ray on the offshore sandbanks from April. Good mixed fishing through May.
Summer (June – August)
Bass fishing peaks in July and August from the beach and rocky marks. Mackerel from the harbour. Tope on the offshore sandbanks. Mullet in the estuary. The beach at Youghal Strand is at its most productive in early morning and evening.
Autumn (September – November)
Bass continue well into autumn from the beach. Coalfish arrive from October. Codling show on the beach and boat marks from November. Flounder fishing picks up again as temperatures drop.

Fish Youghal Strand on a flooding tide at dawn or dusk. Surface lures and shallow-diving plugs worked through the surf produce Bass from June onwards. Alternatively, a simple running ledger with fresh peeler crab cast into the breaking waves at 60–80 metres produces Bass across a wider season including spring and autumn.
⚠️Common mistake: Fishing the beach at midday in summer. Bass are highly light-sensitive and are most active at low light. Early morning sessions are consistently the most productive.

Fish the dyke wall and sheltered sections of the estuary on a flooding tide with ragworm or lugworm on a light running ledger. Flounder respond to a slow retrieve across the bottom. A light spinning rod of 10–12ft gives good sensitivity for Flounder bites.
⚠️Common mistake: Using too large a bait or hook. Flounder are not large fish — size 2 or 1 hooks with small pieces of worm are more effective than large multi-hook paternoster rigs.
