Baltimore is one of Ireland's premier deep sea angling centres — a picturesque fishing port on the West Cork coast where the Gulf Stream meets rugged Atlantic headlands, creating some of the richest sea angling grounds in Europe. With a modern fleet of well-equipped charter boats, a long tradition of reef, wreck, and shark fishing, and an international reputation that draws anglers from across the continent, Baltimore delivers big-fish experiences that few other ports can match.
The harbour sits at the southern tip of Ireland, sheltered from the prevailing westerlies yet close to deep water. This geography is the key to Baltimore's success as a fishing port — charter boats can reach productive grounds quickly, and the shelter provided by Sherkin Island, Cape Clear Island, and the maze of islands in Roaring Water Bay means there is nearly always fishable water somewhere, even when the open Atlantic is rough.
Blue shark are one of Baltimore's headline attractions. A good run begins around mid-June and often continues into October, with warm weather providing the best prospects. Porbeagle shark, though much less common, also feature in catches. In recent years, the late summer has brought giant bluefin tuna to these waters, providing the ultimate big-game experience. Common skate fishing over the reefs and wrecks has also become a major draw, with fish exceeding 50kg.
Beyond the big game, the offshore reefs and wrecks produce outstanding fishing for pollack, cod, ling, conger, and coalfish. Baltimore is one of the best areas in the country for large pollack on the offshore reefs. The wreck fishing is exceptional, with the seabed off West Cork littered with wrecks that hold resident populations of large fish. These reef and wreck trips provide action-packed days with multiple species and frequent double-figure fish.
Shore anglers are well catered for too. The harbour itself produces flounder, dogfish, and occasional bass on bottom-fished baits. Spinning from the rocks and pier yields pollack and mackerel at high water. Mullet can be targeted with float tackle in sheltered corners. The famous bass beaches of West Cork are within easy reach, and the rocky coastline around Roaring Water Bay holds wrasse, pollack, and conger for the exploring rock angler.
Baltimore's character as a working fishing village adds immeasurably to the experience. The harbour is atmospheric, the village has excellent pubs and restaurants, and the ferry connections to Sherkin and Cape Clear islands open up additional possibilities for both fishing and sightseeing. For the sea angler who wants to combine serious fishing with the best of West Cork, there is nowhere better.
Species present
🐟
Blue Shark
Blue shark are one of Baltimore's signature species. The run typically begins in mid-June as warm Gulf Stream water pushes inshore, and continues through to October. Fish average 50-100lb with specimens over 150lb a genuine possibility. Fishing for blues involves chumming with rubby dubby (mashed fish and bran) to create a scent trail that draws sharks to the boat. The fights are long and spectacular.
🐟
Pollack
Baltimore is one of the premier destinations in Ireland for large pollack. The offshore reefs and wrecks hold fish to double figures, with 8-10lb pollack taken regularly. Reef fishing with live sandeel, artificial lures, or feathered rigs produces consistent catches. The area holds the Irish record for coalfish at 15kg.
🐟
Common Skate
Common skate fishing has become a major attraction off Baltimore. These enormous fish are found over the reefs and rough ground, with specimens exceeding 50kg. Fishing with whole mackerel or fish bait on heavy tackle, the fight with a big skate is a genuine test of stamina and skill. All skate are returned alive.

Access & bases
Baltimore is approximately 100km south-west of Cork city via the N71 through Skibbereen, then the R595 to Baltimore. The harbour has a public pier, parking, and slipway. Charter boats depart from the harbour — booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak summer months. Ferry services run to Sherkin Island and Cape Clear Island from Baltimore pier. Shore fishing is accessible from the harbour area, nearby headlands, and beaches along the West Cork coast.
Signature features
Gulf Stream Influence
Baltimore's position at the southern tip of Ireland, close to the Gulf Stream, brings warm water and a diversity of species rarely found elsewhere in these islands. Exotic visitors including bluefin tuna, sunfish, and even leatherback turtles are encountered alongside the regular quarry.
Wreck & Reef Capital
The seabed off West Cork is littered with wrecks and studded with reefs, creating an underwater landscape that holds huge populations of fish. Baltimore's charter skippers know these marks intimately, and a day's wreck fishing can produce spectacular mixed catches.
Island Shelter
Sherkin Island, Cape Clear Island, and the islands of Roaring Water Bay provide shelter from the Atlantic swell. This means charter boats can nearly always find fishable water, and the inshore waters among the islands offer excellent small-boat and shore fishing even when the open sea is rough.
Season by season
January – March
Winter fishing is quieter but wreck fishing for cod, ling, and pollack remains productive on calm days. Shore fishing can produce codling, whiting, and coalfish, especially at night.
April – May
The season begins to pick up. Pollack and wrasse fishing improves on the reefs. Mackerel start to arrive. Charter boats return to regular service. Shore fishing produces pollack and mackerel from rocks and piers.
June – August
Peak season. Blue shark fishing is at its best from mid-June. Reef and wreck fishing produces excellent mixed catches. Bluefin tuna may appear in late summer. Common skate fishing is productive. Shore fishing offers the full range of species.
September – October
Shark fishing continues into October in warm years. Wreck fishing is at its peak — October to January is prime time for cod and pollack on the wrecks. Shore fishing for bass improves as autumn sets in. Ray, dogfish, and flatfish are caught from beaches.
November – December
Wreck fishing remains excellent through winter for those willing to brave the weather. Cod, ling, and conger are the main targets. Shore fishing produces codling, whiting, and dabs after dark.

Shark Fishing (June – October)
Patterns
Whole mackerelFish stripRubby dubby
Shark fishing is done at anchor over deep water. The skipper creates a chum trail (rubby dubby) from mashed fish and bran. Baits — whole mackerel or large fish strips — are suspended at various depths behind the boat on balloon or float rigs. Patience is key. When a shark takes, let it run before striking. Expect fights of 20-40 minutes with a decent blue.
⚠️Common mistake: Striking too early. Let the shark take the bait and make its first run before setting the hook. Premature strikes are the most common reason for lost fish.
Reef & Wreck Fishing (Year-round)
Patterns
Live sandeelArtificial luresMackerel stripHokkai rigs
Reef fishing involves drifting over rocky ground with baited rigs or lures worked near the bottom. For pollack, live sandeel or long flowing traces with artificial eels are deadly. On wrecks, drop heavy pirks or baited traces to the bottom and wind up — the first few turns often produce the biggest fish as they intercept the bait rising past their lie.
⚠️Common mistake: Using tackle that is too light for wreck fishing. Big conger and ling require 30lb class gear minimum. Losing fish in the wreck structure is the main frustration for under-equipped anglers.
Shore Fishing (Year-round)
Patterns
Mackerel stripLugwormCrabSpinning lures
From the harbour pier, bottom fish with mackerel strip or lugworm for flounder, dogfish, and ray. At high water, spin from the rocks for pollack and mackerel. For bass, target the sandy beaches at dawn or dusk with live sandeel on the flooding tide. Float fishing with bread in sheltered corners can produce good mullet.
⚠️Common mistake: Only fishing one method. Versatility is key for shore fishing — switch between spinning, float fishing, and bottom fishing to cover all the species available.
Core technique
Charter Boat Reef Fishing
1Book a charter in advance — confirm what type of fishing you want (reef, wreck, shark) so the skipper can plan accordingly.
2Bring warm, waterproof clothing even in summer — it is always cooler offshore.
3Tackle is usually provided on charter boats. Rigs and bait are supplied by the skipper.
4Listen to the skipper's instructions on technique and fish handling — they know these grounds intimately.
5Be prepared for mixed catches — a typical reef trip might produce pollack, cod, ling, wrasse, and coalfish in a single drift.
💡 If you suffer from seasickness, take medication before departure. The crossing to the offshore grounds can be choppy.

Where to fish
Baltimore Harbour & Pier
The harbour area offers accessible shore fishing from the pier and rocks. Bottom fishing for flounder, dogfish, and occasional bass. Spinning for pollack and mackerel at high water. Float fishing for mullet in sheltered corners.
Roaring Water Bay
The sheltered waters between Baltimore, Sherkin Island, and the smaller islands offer excellent inshore fishing. Small boats can work the reefs and channels for pollack, mackerel, ray, and flatfish. Tope are a possibility in summer.
Offshore Reefs
The many reefs and rock pinnacles offshore from Baltimore hold huge stocks of pollack, cod, and wrasse. Drifting over these marks with live sandeel or artificial lures produces consistent catches of quality fish.
Wrecks
The seabed off West Cork is littered with wrecks that hold ling, conger, cod, and pollack. Wreck fishing from October to January is particularly productive for the biggest fish.
Deep Water (Shark & Skate)
The deeper water beyond the reefs is where shark, common skate, and in late summer bluefin tuna are targeted. Charter boats run to these marks which are typically 30+ minutes from the harbour.

Conservation & stewardship
🌿
Catch and release is strongly encouraged for all sharks, common skate, and other large species. These fish are slow-growing and late-maturing — their conservation is essential for the long-term future of the fishery. Handle large fish alongside the boat where possible, remove hooks quickly, and minimise time out of water. Bass have specific size and bag limits — check current IFI regulations. Bluefin tuna must be tagged and released under the IFI catch-and-release programme.
Main access: Tackle and bait available locally. Charter boats supply all equipment but anglers can bring their own gear., Baltimore has excellent accommodation including Casey's Hotel, B&Bs, and self-catering options. The village also has good pubs and restaurants., Several licensed charter boats operate from Baltimore harbour including Baltimore Angling (Radiance — Skipper Kieran Collins). Boats typically carry 8-12 anglers and are fully equipped with safety and fishing tackle.
