Upper Lough Erne is one of the finest coarse and pike fishing waters in Europe — a vast, labyrinthine system of interconnected lakes, channels, islands, and reed-fringed bays stretching south and east of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh. Where Lower Lough Erne to the west is primarily a game fishery known for its wild brown trout, the Upper Lough is a coarse angler's paradise.
The system is immense, covering over fifteen thousand hectares of water. The landscape is one of extraordinary beauty — drumlins rising from the water, wooded islands, winding channels, and quiet backwaters that seem to go on forever. Within this watery maze live massive populations of bream, roach, roach-bream hybrids, perch, rudd, tench, eels, and — most spectacularly — pike.
Pike fishing on Upper Lough Erne is legendary. Fish of thirty pounds and above are taken with regularity that would be extraordinary on any other water. One visiting party recorded seventy pike to thirty pounds in just two days. The pike congregate in the weedy, reed-fringed bays from November to March, spreading throughout the lough as water warms. Trolling, deadbaiting, lure fishing, and fly fishing for pike are all productive.
For coarse match anglers, the Erne system hosts the annual Waterways Ireland Classic and other major festivals that attract hundreds of competitors from across Europe. Developed fishing stands at locations like Cleenish Island, Bellanaleck, Broadmeadow, and the Enniskillen town stretches offer excellent bream, roach, hybrid, and perch fishing. Pole, feeder, and waggler methods all produce results.
The fishing centre of Enniskillen sits between the Upper and Lower Loughs and makes an excellent base, with tackle shops, accommodation, and boat hire all available. Several estates around the lough offer fishing holidays with boats, accommodation, and guides — notably on the south-eastern stretches between Lisnaskea and Newtownbutler.
A DAERA rod licence is required for all freshwater fishing in Northern Ireland, with a coarse rod licence sufficient for pike and coarse species. Some private fisheries may require additional permission.

Cleenish Island
Near Bellanaleck village. Over fifty comfortable pegs sheltered from prevailing winds. Excellent bream, hybrid, perch, roach, and skimmer fishing, especially spring through autumn.
Enniskillen Town Stretches
Queen Elizabeth Road, Cornagrade, Sligo Road, Portora, and Broadmeadow sections of the River Erne through Enniskillen. Good bream, roach, perch, and hybrid fishing with easy town access.
Ballinaleck Quay
A favourite angling area on the Upper Lough. Good pike fishing year-round with shore and boat access. The surrounding bays and channels hold excellent coarse fish stocks.
