The Royal Canal runs 146 kilometres westward from Dublin to the Shannon at Richmond Harbour near Cloondara in County Longford. Constructed between 1790 and 1817, it was restored and reopened for navigation in 2010 and has since become one of Ireland's most popular angling venues — particularly for coarse match fishing and pike angling.
The canal holds excellent stocks of roach, bream, tench, rudd, perch, pike, and in some sections, carp. The eastern stretches between Leixlip and Enfield are among the most productive competition waters in the country, with the Royal Enfield Coarse Angling Club hosting major national events annually. Further west around Mullingar, the canal is known for quality pike fishing — fish exceeding ninety centimetres have been taken on fly and lure in recent seasons.
The Royal Canal Greenway runs alongside much of the canal from Maynooth to Cloondara, offering a purpose-built walking and cycling trail that also provides easy access to fishing stretches. The towpath is well maintained and the canal passes through attractive countryside, native woodland, and picturesque villages.
Key angling stretches include Leixlip to Castleknock (a nineteen-kilometre stretch between Lock 12 and Lock 13 with incredible coarse fish stocks), Enfield to Ballasport Bridge (a thirty-kilometre section that hosts the biggest annual competitions), and the Mullingar area where the canal peaks before descending towards the Shannon.
